17.7%: South Australia reports highest hike in job vacancies

South Australia registered in November the highest increase in job vacancies across the country, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

In the three months leading to November, job vacancies in the state increased by 17.7%, a jump of 13 percentage points above the national growth of 4.2%.

There are currently 23,000 job vacancies in South Australia, which is more than 50% above the decade average. The majority, 88%, are in the private sector, with over 20,000 positions available.

"These promising figures once again demonstrate there are plenty of jobs available for South Australians looking to get into the workforce," said Stephen Mullighan, South Australia's Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, in a statement.

The increase indicates a rebound from the 4.3% decline in job vacancies over the past year, according to the state government.

"South Australia's job market continues to go from strength to strength, as the nation's economy slows," Mullighan said.

Best place to do business

The state's strong performance has also been highlighted by the Business Council of Australia (BCA), which ranked South Australia the best place in the country to do business.

The BCA's Regulation Rumble 2024 report attributed it to the state's lower payroll taxes, lower property charges, as well as less voluminous business licensing.

"South Australians have made it clear that they want their state to be destination number one for business, and other jurisdictions need to take note if they want to remain competitive in attracting business investment," said BCA chief executive Bran Black in a statement.

"We know that lower taxes, and more efficient regulatory settings increase business growth and productivity — South Australia is leading that charge and will see the benefit of increased investment."
