Wattyl Paints recently rolled out IBM’s Workplace Services Express portal to assist in delivering information, processes and collaborative tools to employees. Information residing in Wattyl’s various systems will also be integrated through the portal, such as the company’s PRISM Enterprise Resources Planning system and JD Edwards Financials, or business applications, such as Stratum, Hyperion, and Microsoft Office. The portal was implemented by Synoptic Solutions in conjunction with BCA IT, and Wattyl anticipates an overall increase in productivity amongst its 850 employees who will utilise the new portal throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Coles Myer, Flight Centre, Microsoft, Ernst & Young and BHP Billiton have the best corporate career websites in Australia, according to the recently released Top Employer Web Benchmark Australia 2005. Conducted by Potentialpark Communications, 719 graduates, students and young professionals from Australia and New Zealand ranked 82 corporate career websites on 79 features that are important to jobseekers, such as inspiration, providing confidence and respecting their time. Potentialpark Communications said that the purpose of a company’s career website is to mirror to the outside how much a company prioritises its employees and recruiting in general, and that getting the right people is all about communication.
Demand for e-learning on the increase
Demand for online learning is increasing rapidly as a growing number of organisations offer further education and training as a strategy for attracting and retaining employees, according to a Chandler Macleod Group study of more than 1,200 employers. Over 90 per cent said further education and training contributed to effective succession planning and to attracting new talent into their organisation while more than 80 per cent indicated that more than 1 per cent of their payrolls were allocated to employee education and training. Furthermore, the survey found that more than 50 per cent planned to increase their further education budget over the next 12 months.
