An extra $7 million over three years has been announced to cover wage rises for low-paid community sector workers in Tasmania.
The Tasmanian government is set to pump more than $7 million into raising wages for community service sector workers.
The government’s announcement following the finding that community sector workers should receive equal pay to their mainland counterparts, following a 2012 Fair Work Australia ruling.
In reality, the announcement means workers will receive pay rises of up to 45% over the next eight years. The $7million pay injection is follows $30 million previously allocated. Premier Lara Giddings said it wasn’t enough.
Giddings told Parliament that both the Federal and State governments would be allocating a further $7 million each to cover the cost of the Fair Work Australia decision.
Some 11,000 Tasmanians are currently employed in the sector.
