A report into the use of all terrain vehicles by workers from the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) has revealed that workers had a culture of dangerous “thrill riding”.

The AAD report, issued to Tasmanian News Corp publication The Mercury after it lodged a freedom of information request, revealed that workers had been going on so-called “jollies”, and that the AAD had failed to inform workers of the dangers of operating quad-bikes.

It also revealed that the AAD had experienced two quad bike accidents per year for the past 10 years.

The report followed an incident in 2008 where a worker had driven a quadbike on the Antarctic’s “Half Pipe”, used by workers for joy rides.
