'This is going to be an intense year,' Mark Zuckerberg tells staff
Meta will be conducting performance-based cuts in 2025 as CEO Mark Zuckerberg tells employees that it will be an "intense year" for the organisation, according to reports.
Zuckerberg told employees in an internal memo obtained by CNBC that they are raising the bar on performance management and moving out low performers faster.
"We typically manage out people who aren't meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we're going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle, with the intention of backfilling these roles in 2025," Zuckerberg said in the memo.
CNBC reported that approximately five per cent of the tech giant's lowest performers will be affected, citing another message from a company director.
Employees who will be impacted will be informed on February 10 or later.
"We won't manage out everyone who didn't meet expectations for the last period if we're optimistic about their future performance, and for those we do let go, we'll provide generous severance in line with what we provided with previous cuts," Zuckerberg added.
The Meta CEO announced the performance-based cuts as he noted that the company is working on some of the "most important technologies of the world."
"This is going to be an intense year, and I want to make sure we have the best people on our teams," he said.
Meta's announcement comes amid reports that fellow tech giant Microsoft is also planning on cutting underperforming employees.
Meta previously reduced its headcount by 13%, or by more than 11,000, in 2022. It was followed by further layoffs across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs last year.
The company currently has over 72,000 employees as of September 2024, up by nine per cent year-over-year, according to its latest quarterly report.
