Meta lays off employees in WhatsApp, Instagram groups: reports

Meta is laying off employees across various sectors, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs, according to reports.

Reuters, citing a spokesperson from Meta, reported that a few teams at the organisation are "making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy."

"This includes moving some teams to different locations, and moving some employees to different roles," the spokesperson told the news outlet. "In situations like this when a role is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for impacted employees."

One person said a new push toward work on AI projects means more resources are being directed to AI and infrastructure teams, according to Fortune. The company is also “remapping” roles, deciding where the bulk of specific teams will be physically located given the three-day in-office work mandate, the person said.

No official numbers have been confirmed on how many employees were affected by the layoffs. But The Verge, which first reported the cuts, said they "seem to coincide with reorganisations of specific teams" rather than company-wide layoffs.

Meta has laid off tens of thousands of employees in the past few years, including more than 11,000 employees or 13% of its workforce in 2022.

The following year, the company announced that it is cutting 10,000 more people in its management theme of "Year of Efficiency."
