Expert offers tips on how organisations can navigate vast international talent market

How to get started with global talent recruitment

Recent research has revealed that employers across Australia are tapping into the international market to find skilled talent for their organisations.

But dipping their toes into the vast talent pool can also be an extreme challenge, considering the variety of talent available and the legislation that employers also need to take into account.

Jenny Truax, head of global talent acquisition for Safeguard Global, advised employers in a whitepaper to avoid recruiting "everywhere."

According to Truax, employers can start by just tapping into a handful of markets at any given time, starting with solid research to hone their targeting.

"When we're looking for software developers, we research where the greatest density of developer talent is. You can learn a lot with search and there are tools that do market analysis," Truax said.

"There may be skilled talent in one locale, but if there are only a dozen people with the specialty you need, it's going to be hard to recruit."

Truax also suggested consulting local experts when recruiting from international markets.

"It's important to understand local employment legislation, customs, and culture, like how candidates communicate," she said. "In some countries, we use telephone calls or email, while in others we rely on WhatsApp."

Globally, there are already 40 million people who are digital nomads, with their surge fuelled by the emergence of remote work over the past few years, according to Safeguard Global's whitepaper.

"The flexibility of remote work has made it more viable for organisations to tap into global talent pools and reap the rewards of a mobile workforce," the paper read.

"This cultural shift creates opportunities for businesses and workers alike in our increasingly connected world."
