National HR Summit concludes in Sydney

Day two of the Sydney National HR Summit concluded at Luna Park today, having heard insights by HR professionals from the likes of Facebook, McDonald’s Australia, Spotify and Nova Entertainment.

At the Main Conference, Sarah Derry, Vice President Talent & Culture Australia, AccorHotels, spoke with the company’s Director, Academie Australia, Kay Goodman, on the topic of Next level learning and development.

Derry and Goodman talked about how as workplaces and jobs continue to change, HR departments need to take a different approach to learning. This includes moving away from traditional L&D towards ongoing, experiential capability building.

Meanwhile, at the Director’s Forum, the day concluded with a lively panel discussion on Driving culture change from the c-suite down.

It featured insights from Heidi Beck, Chief People Officer, Pacific National, Amy Rixon, Chief People Officer at Frucor, and Rebecca Nash, Group Executive People & Culture, Perpetual Limited.

According to Rixon, the “real culture” in an organisation is the “topic du jour right now”.

She said that all HR professionals, particularly those who are in publicly listed organisations or working directly with a board, should have this front of mind and be able to talk to it.

Rixon also told HRD that it’s important for HR professionals to consider storytelling when driving cultural change.

“You cannot over-communicate and remember that ‘storytelling’ - as a skill - plays an important role in engaging at all levels: from board to front line employees.”

About 1000 HR professionals registered for the National HR Summit, including HR Directors, CEOs and business leaders from diverse industries.

HRD would like to thank all the HR professionals who attended this year’s National HR Summit and we wish you all the best in meeting your HR objectives for the year ahead.
