IT employment looking rosy

The IT industry has experienced continued growth in the first quarter of 2005, with further growth predicted for the remainder of the year. Icon Recruitment recently released its first Internet Index for the year, which found a strong increase in IT jobs across Queensland, a continuing focus on contract work and increased focus on technical/engineering and support positions. Contracting still appears to be the choice of employment for IT personnel with over 82 per cent of all IT jobs advertised being for contract work. The index found the top 10 IT jobs advertised in the last year were technical/engineering, support, project management, quality, analysts, sales/marketing, network/comms, systems development, management and senior management.

MyCareer to power IT2 jobs

The Information Technology Contract and Recruitment Association’s (ITCRA) job board for IT professionals, IT2.com.au, will be powered by mycareer.com.au. Due to be launched on 1 July 2005, IT2.com.au is a careers portal created for the IT industry, and for the first time advertisers who are not ITCRA members will be able to advertise on the site. ITCRA-member job ads will be distinctly recognisable with the ITCRA logo indicating the advertiser’s compliance with the Association’s Code of Conduct. Norman Lacy, executive director of ITCRA, said MyCareer’s employment advertising expertise coupled with their approach to IT development within their own business would result in a more comprehensive service that would make it easier for candidates to find the job they want.

Checking employee emails needs tough policy stance

Monitoring every inbound and outbound email is becoming normal business practice and organisations need to have clear policies in place to meet legal requirements and employee expectations. Peter Croft, managing director Clearswift Asia Pacific, recently said organisations have to educate their workforce about these policies and why they are in place, and enforce these policies equitably across the organisation. Speaking at a business briefing in Brisbane, he said the more complex threats of employee email and web use can come from inside and outside an organisation.
