Government launches employer network to boost veterans' employment outcomes

The South Australian government has brought together 15 employers from the private and public sectors to boost employment outcomes for veterans and their partners.

The newly launched South Australian Veteran Employer Network is comprised of organisations from various industries, including consulting and service businesses, banking, defence industry, emergency services and local government.

These employers will receive mentoring and support on the best practices on recruitment, workplace support, as well as defence/veteran cultural awareness.

"We want more businesses to be aware of the great opportunities that come with employing veterans and the diverse skill sets they can bring," said Member of Parliament Geoff Brock in a statement.

"By building a network of like-minded employers, we are fostering a supportive environment that leads to better job outcomes and helps veterans find work."

Among the functions of the network include establishing collaborative relationships among participating employers through regular bi-monthly networking events this year.

Other functions include the promotion of "strengths-based approach to veteran employment to counter negative stereotypes within organisations/businesses, leadership, HR teams, the veteran community and the wider employment sector."

The network also serves as an avenue for employers to share contact details of potential and consenting veterans to boost their chances of getting employed.

Expanding network for veterans

According to Veterans SA, the network was established after their talks with local employers of veterans underscored the need for a mechanism connecting them all.

"The network is a unique connector, facilitating collaboration between employers, where there is no competition between members and the group's sole focus is meaningful outcomes for the veteran community," said Veterans SA director Chantelle Bohan in a statement.

Veterans SA is seeking to expand the 15-member network and encourage other businesses to join the group recognising veterans' potential.

The SA government said there are more than 6,000 veterans transitioning from the Australian Defence Force each year with civilian employers specialist qualifications and technical expertise.

They also have discipline, teamwork, the ability to work under pressure, as well as the highly sought-after leadership skills, according to the government.

"Defence partners also share unique qualities and experiences that are highly sought after in the workplace, making them another valuable addition to South Australia's economy," Brock said.

The network is part of the government's $2.1 million budget to improve outcomes for veterans and their families.
