Channel Nine mandates economy flights for 60 Minutes staff: reports

Channel Nine has mandated employees of its flagship news programme, 60 Minutes, fly economy for work trips, according to reports.

Sky News, which cited The Australian, reported the news of the revised work trip mandate, which apparently exempts two presenters of the programme.

According to the report, the news was "not well received by those work on the programme."

"They are tick, tick, ticked off about it," Sky News reported, citing The Australian.

The change comes after Nine Entertainment unveiled a $30-million cost slashing plan that will reduce its workforce by five per cent amid declining revenue and shrinking TV audiences.

The plan saw about 85 roles eliminated, according to CEO Mike Sneesby. Affected employees include those in the newsrooms, print operations, as well as audience and commercial growth divisions.

Among those who took voluntary redundancies include veterans from Nine-owned publications such as Australian Financial Review, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, WAtoday, and the Brisbane Times.

According to Sky News' report, a Nine representative said the organisation was "reshaping the publishing business to ensure a sustainable future in response to the challenging advertising market and collapse of the Meta deal."
