What qualifications do you hold?
Master of Business Administration; Master of Management – Human Resource Management; Bachelor of Business Administration; Postgraduate Diploma – Human Resource Management; Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment; Certificate in Public Administration.
Why did you get into HR?
I enjoyed the challenge of dealing with people and managing change. I had worked my way from a junior employee to a line management supervisor and was looking for something new, different and challenging.
How did you get into HR?
My first job in the HR area was as a union official, I worked in a variety of roles with the union for the next 12 years and then left to move into industry as a HR manager, predominately involved in organisations requiring improvement and/or change.
What do you think it takes to succeed in HR?
Understanding of the business you operate in, courage and willingness to stand up for what you believe in even if it is unpopular.
How do you manage relationships with senior executives?
You have to build credibility and show that you are adding value to the business and that your strategies, policies and procedures improve the ability of the operational managers to manage their people and their business. When you do this it is easy to have a relationship as an equal business partner
What advice would you give to graduates considering a career in HR?
Be prepared for a challenging environment where you have to earn the respect and trust of those you work for and with. Don’t forget that our role is to look after the business and well as ensuring fairness to the people. Challenge the status quo.
