The Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) recently announced the appointment of Serge Sardo as its new CEO. Sardo is currently the director of business development at the Australian Institute of Management (AIM), and will take up the role of AHRI CEO on 26 March. Sardo is also deputy chairman of Key Solutions and a member of the City of Port Phillip Business AdvisoryGroup. His previous senior executive roles have been in the business and HR fields with Learning Dimensions, RTK Corporate Human Resources and the Family Relationships Institute. For seven years he was the managing director of a company in the automotive industry.
2007 a boom year for accountants
2007 will be a boom year for accountants in Australia, according to Nigel Barcham, director, Robert Half International ANZ. Companies continue to invest heavily in their finance and accounting teams, he said, but the skills shortage appears set to continue in 2007. The threat to Australian companies from talent being recruited to work overseas will continue, with Hong Kong, Singapore, India, China and Japan providing the most lucrative opportunities to Australian finance professionals. “Australia needs to position itself as the hub for on-shoring the highly skilled finance roles for Asia-Pacific’s global companies,” he said.
Too much love is bad for the workplace
Research into the working relationships of executive teams found that leaders who place too much emphasis on affiliation with their teams are less focused on productivity and performance, according to Hay Group. Based on a survey of 20 executive leadership teams at Fortune 500 companies, the research found teams whose members are interdependent, and work towards a common purpose, perform more effectively. However, leaders displaying high levels of affiliation are far less likely to create highly effective teams than their less affiliative counterparts. “The message to senior business leaders is ‘don’t overdo the love’,” said Chris Watkin, associate director at Hay Group.
