The Australian HR awards were held on Friday 15 September. The awards are now in their sixth year, and recognise excellence across 17 areas of the HR profession. Each year, we aim to raise the bar in terms of entry standards for the awards. This showed in the entries for this year, and the judges noted the improvement in nominations for 2006.

The Awards fill a much needed space in the Australian HR profession. HR is probably one of the fastest evolving functions within modern business, and is faced with a gamut of challenges that professionals in other functions might struggle to face. Yes, HR does cop a lot of criticism for not pulling its weight when compared to other functions, and some of this criticism is deserved.

But human nature tends to focus upon the negative, and HR can be an easy target given the range of often quite sensitive issues it has to deal with in modern businesses. There are many switched on HR professionals and functions that are stepping up to the plate within their respective organisations, and this deserves recognition. Outside of their own organisations, it’s probably unlikely that the HR professionals and functions will receive the recognition they deserve.

That’s where the Australian HR Awards come in. HR is at a crossroads at the moment, and it seems it often struggles to find its way. Individual HR professionals need guidance and inspiration on the journey, and there are leaders within HR and companies that are showing the way.

HR has also struggled to achieve a cohesive identity, compared to professionals in other functions. The Australian HR Awards provide an opportunity for individuals, teams and organisations to come together to recognise and celebrate HR as a profession, and to raise the standard of HR through recognition of benchmark practice.

Congratulations to all finalists and winners in this year’s Australian HR Awards. It’s sometimes a tough gig being in HR, but those at the forefront of the profession who are leading the way deserve recognition for a job well done.
