Marine CHRO shares innovative ways to recruit talent into sector
With so many employers having a hard time recruiting the talent that they need, one human resources leader and her team in an old school industry are coming up with innovative solutions.
In speaking with HRD Talk, Danielle Lewis, CHRO of the Vancouver-based Pacific Pilotage Authority, detailed how being an outsider helped her efforts to fill open positions at the organization.
“We've really had to think outside the box with how we can… [come up with] the solution for this workforce shortage.
“It's pretty unique because… the industry has come together as a whole and is collaborating to attract and develop the next generation of mariners,” she said on Innovative hiring in an old school industry: CHRO of Pacific Pilotage Authority on HRD Talk.
In January, Canada, overall, had job vacancies totaling more than 632,000.
Two of the things Lewis and her team have done is to offer scholarship opportunities and to focus on recruiting second career seekers.
“At the organization, we've been working… to attract and promote our employment brand. But externally, we've been really partnering with organizations and other employers,” she said.
“It's pretty unique, because… there was a recognition that if we're going to solve this workforce shortage, we all really need to come together and collaborate. And our workforce pool is pretty unique, because the marine pilots that we recruit are usually 15 years into their career. So it's a very unique role.”
