Olympian details how HR can mitigate risks to move forward
There have been a lot of uncertainties in the workplace, and HR leaders must learn to deal with it, according to one expert.
“Uncertainty has everything to do with risk, and we all have our own level of risk tolerance,” says Vince Poscente, Olympian skier and founder and CEO of Rapid Professional Development, in talking to HRD.
“We live in the age of speed. We have less and less time to be able to understand the runway that we have in order to have that decision-making status to say, ‘Okay, [with] this uncertainty, I've minimized the risk, and I can move forward.’”

Being able to prepare to deal with risks is key to embracing uncertainty in the workplace, Poscente says.
He used physical health as an example.
“Somebody gets some sort of issue, let's say, diabetes. Well, could we have been thinking about this physical health much earlier in terms of what kind of foods we ate, how we are [with our] exercise program?”
To mitigate this – from an uncertainty-risk standpoint – leaders must “consistently and confidently try to grow that risk tolerance” to the point where they can say, “Okay, I've been okay in the past. I was afraid of something I didn't really know,’” says Poscente.
“It really behooves each of our employees to embrace that kind of growth of risk tolerance.”
Employee retention is key in an uncertain job market, according to a previous report.
Poscente also discussed how HR professionals can help instill a sense of clarity and purpose in their employees.
