The Boulevard Club's secret to loyalty? A 120-year legacy of community and care

As the Boulevard Club nears its 120th anniversary, Alena Miatlushka, Director of Human Resources, says the private club’s rich history and community ethos play a crucial role in shaping employee engagement and retention strategies.

“We are immensely proud of our heritage,” she says. “We leverage this rich history to strengthen our workplace culture. It’s not just about where we are today—it’s about where we’ve come from, and how our past continues to influence the way we operate, engage with employees, and maintain a positive work environment.”

The Boulevard Club fosters a sense of belonging and community for its staff.

"We value a family-oriented atmosphere, which we don’t only extend to members but also to employees. We recognize that our team spends a significant portion of their lives with us, and creating a supportive, inclusive environment helps to create that bond,” Miatlushka explains.

The club fosters a culture of inclusivity and camaraderie, where every team member is encouraged to connect with the club's mission, through events such as the Sail Past, the Philpott fundraiser, Remembrance Day ceremonies, shoreline clean-ups, and more.

“Through storytelling and training, we ensure that our employees feel connected to the club’s rich legacy and know that they are part of something truly meaningful,” she says.

Apple trees and employee engagement

During orientation training, employees are taught the club's history and milestones, such as weathering four fires, the Great Depression, two World Wars, and a devastating ice storm.

“We highlight long-tenured employees, creating a sense of pride in the club's legacy. This past year, we celebrated employees with over 40 years of service. These stories, shared by long-time employees, connect our past to the present and allow us to honor their contributions,” Miatlushka says.

A long-serving employee once shared that the apple tree in front of the club’s main entrance was part of an apple pie competition organized by the ladies of the Club in the 1920s.

“These stories are passed down, creating a sense of continuity and helping us maintain our deep-rooted community values,” she says.

As an athletic and waterfront club, The Boulevard Club actively supports work-life balance, recognizing the importance of flexibility and employee well-being. Miatlushka points to the club’s flexible work arrangements and transportation assistance as critical components of this approach.

"We understand that a healthy work-life balance is crucial, and we offer flexibility in working hours to accommodate the needs of our employees. Whether it’s adjusting schedules to manage personal commitments or allowing employees to participate in wellness activities, we aim to create a work environment that supports overall well-being," she says.

Fitness benefits for employee wellness

The club has introduced a Staff Wellness Coordinator, who has a fitness background and is dedicated to promoting employee well-being. This role oversees a variety of wellness initiatives, including mobility sessions, mindfulness practices, yoga, and meditation.

"Employees are encouraged to participate in these sessions during their workday, whether it’s on their breaks or coordinated with their department heads," says Miatlushka. "We actively support department heads in allowing staff the time to engage in these wellness activities whenever possible, as we believe it contributes to a healthier, more balanced work environment."

Employees also have access to outdoor activities like paddleboarding and kayaking, either before or after shifts, and can bring their families along, “which helps foster a strong sense of community," she adds.

Further reinforcing its commitment to employee wellness, the club also provides transportation assistance to ensure that employees have access to convenient travel options.

"Our team members are encouraged to explore the surrounding nature trails for breaks or after work. These activities not only offer physical benefits but also help to clear the mind and recharge."

"Overall, we aim to offer a holistic approach to employee engagement. Our goal is to create an environment where employees feel supported, valued, and empowered to achieve a balance between their professional and personal lives," Miatlushka concludes.
