Labour disruption has been averted at a major Saskatchewan oil refinery after company executives and union representatives were finally able to reach a tentative agreement.
About 800 employees had been poised for a lockout starting on Sunday – instead, Unifor will be presenting a deal to its membership for ratification later today.
“We are pleased that we could reach an agreement that was fair for both sides,” said Co-op vice president Gil Le Dressay. “While the agreement is still tentative pending ratification by the membership we are encouraged by Unifor's support for the agreement.”
The union's bargaining committee said it wasn’t “the deal we wanted” but confirmed it would be recommending its acceptance.
“I'm very proud of the commitment and skill shown by the bargaining committees,” said Scott Doherty, executive assistant to the Unifor national president. “They worked very hard to find common ground.”
Negotiations for a new contract have been ongoing for months after the last contract expired in January 2016.
