Raise coincides with federal minimum wage bump of $0.45
Many Canadians have officially received a pay bump with the start of April, but the Canadian Prime Minister and Members of Parliament are seeing an increase far greater than the average Canadian, according to a report.
Effective April 1, sessional allowances and additional salaries have officially taken effect, according to the House of Commons.
Under the new policy, 338 MPs are receiving a pay raise to $209,800. This translates to an additional $6,700 for each MP this year, according to the Daily Hive.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) noted that on average, MPs earn $203,100 annually, according to the Daily Hive report.
Getting the same amount of pay increase is the Canadian prime minister, pursuant to the Salaries Act or the Ministries and Ministers of State Act, according to the House of Commons.
“The sessional allowance and additional salaries are adjusted each year on April 1 based on the index of the average percentage increase in base-rate wages for a calendar year in Canada resulting from major settlements negotiated in the private sector,” a House of Commons representative said, according to the Daily Hive.
“This index is published by Employment and Social Development Canada within three months following the end of each calendar year.”
The increase coincides with the minimum wage increase for federal government workers. At the federal level, the wage will rise to $17.75 per hour from the $17.30 hourly rate.
Canadian workers take home an average of $67,282 annually, according to the Daily Hive report.
Four Canadian provinces are also increasing their minimum wage rates this month.
Eight-in-ten (79%) Canadians oppose the salary increase for MPs this month, according to a Leger survey of over 1,500 Canadians.
