No foul play in Walmart worker's death: Police

There is no evidence of foul play in the death of the 19-year-old Walmart worker in Nova Scotia last month, according to police.

On Oct. 20, Halifax Regional Police officers were called to a sudden death at Walmart located at 6990 Mumford Road, where they found the deceased worker.

The woman, who was an employee of the store, was located in a large walk-in oven belonging to the store’s bakery department, the police said.

“The police investigation determined the death is not suspicious and there is no evidence of foul play,” said the police in an update on Monday.

Const. Martin Cromwell, Halifax police’s public information officer, said police conducted interviews and reviewed video footage to determine if there was any criminality.

"We do not believe anyone else was involved in the circumstances surrounding the woman's death," he said in a video message posted Monday.

Nova Scotia's Department of Labour is now leading the investigation into the case.

"This remains an active investigation, and as such, we are unable to provide further details at this time," the labour department said, according to a CBC report.

Previously, SaskPower was sentenced in a Weyburn courtroom, facing a historic workplace fine of $840,000, the largest in Saskatchewan’s history. The penalty came after the utility company was found guilty of three workplace safety violations that resulted in the tragic deaths of two experienced employees in 2020.
