What are the top 20 jobs in Canada?

When it comes to employment in Canada, data engineer comes out as the top job.

That’s according to job site Indeed, which compiled the list based on employer demand, salary (using a base salary of at least $75,000) and consistent growth in the share of job postings from 2019-2022.

The average salary for a data engineer is $85,706 and while not the highest on the list, the growth in share of job posts from 2019 to 2022 is an impressive 242 per cent.

In a very tight labour market, nearly half of managers (47 per cent) are reporting an increase in voluntary turnover within their department in the last year. To meet these challenges, two in five (42 per cent) are increasing starting salaries, finds a survey by Robert Half Canada.

Not surprisingly, several positions fall within the tech industry, and Indeed has seen many companies hiring for tech positions over the past six months, especially at big banks and financial service companies.

Although tech jobs cooled in early March, the sector has been a key driver of overall Canadian employment growth in recent years and there is a strong demand for workers with these skills, according to Brendan Bernard, senior economist at Indeed. For example, job postings in software development, remained double their pre-pandemic level in June.
