Digital Nova Scotia gets multimillion-dollar investment to train workers

Industry association Digital Nova Scotia will be receiving $3.7 million from the Federal government so they can train workers from the four Atlantic provinces for future tech roles.

The funding will be going to association's Skills for Hire Atlantic project, which will train 1,500 participants on various skills that employers in the tech industry are looking for.

Wayne Sumarah, chief executive officer of Digital Nova Scotia, said that their project "upskills" participants to prepare them for entry-level tech roles.

"Leveraging transferable and valuable skills built through their own life experiences, this programme provides technical and professional training opportunities to help programme participants forge career paths into the exciting world that tech represents, while addressing the digital talent shortage many employers continue to face," said Sumarah in a statement.

The funding will also support the association's development of a digital platform that will offer online courses and workshops, as well as the establishment of support systems through tutoring, industry mentorships, and partnerships.

According to Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough, the initiative was the government's effort to support people who wants to work amid evolving industries.

"That's why the work that organisations like Digital Nova Scotia are doing is so important. They're equipping workers across Atlantic Canada with the foundational and transferable skills that employers are looking for, so they can get a job, and go to work with confidence," said Qualtrough.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser further added that they are "proud" to invest in Digital Nova Scotia, whose work is essential for the development of the workforce.

"We need a strong, skilled and resilient workforce to support our growing economy in Nova Scotia, and across Atlantic Canada. The work that Digital Nova Scotia is doing to train workers entering the tech sector is vital to this initiative," he said.

The investment is under the Federal government's Skills for Success programme, an initiative to address immediate and long-term needs, particularly for under-represented groups in the labour market.
