Peter Sloly criticized for handling of trucker protests
Amid the ongoing trucker convoy protests in Canada’s capital, Ottawa's police chief Peter Sloly has resigned.
He will publicly announce his resignation after the Ottawa Police Services Board meeting today, according to media reports.
The head of police has been criticized over how he’s handled the upheaval in Ottawa, but has also been accused of bullying and volatile behaviour in the workplace, according to CBC.
Sloly is said to have belittled and berated senior Ottawa Police Service officers in front of colleagues, and failed to put forward a solid operations plan to end the trucker crisis, says the CBC.
Just last week, Sloly said he had no plans to resign.
“I came here to do a job and I’m going to get that job done all the way through,” he said. “Absolutely committed, have a great team here, great officers, we’ve got great partners in the city. We’re going to get this done.”
Prime Minister Just Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act on Monday, giving law enforcement increased powers to end the demonstration and others like it across Canada.
The trucker protests in Ottawa were partly spurned by a new COVID-19 vaccination policy for truck drivers.
