The major Canadian retailer laid off more than 700 employees this month as part of a management restructuring.
Walmart Canada laid off hundreds of employees across the country this month as part of a move to restructure its management.
The retailer eliminated 750 jobs, less than one per cent of its 90,000 employees, after testing a new management structure in select stores.
Walmart Canada told Canadian Press that as part of the changes 1,300 associates were promoted to more senior roles and about 200 store managers were added, with the objective to make more Walmart sales associates available during peak shopping periods.
A spokesman for the company said the job cuts and reworked management will help provide better customer service and career opportunities for its staff.
The company's national expansion would reportedly create jobs in other ways, largely through temporary construction and trade positions.
The retail market is becoming increasingly competitive, Conference Board of Canada economist Julie Ades told HRM. These market pressures are driving layoffs and restructuring across a variety of types of retailers.
