In an interview situation, it’s easy for a jobseeker to become flustered, nervous and overly anxious. However, as HR leaders, you’ve undoubtedly seen it all when it comes to interview blunders.

A new survey from CareerBuilder found that 49% of employers know if a candidate is a good fit for a role within the first five minutes of an interview. By minute 15, that number reaches 90%.

As part of the study, CareerBuilder asked employers to list some of the strangest interview blunders they’d encountered in their professional lives – with the results ranging from the extreme to the downright bizarre.

One recruiter claimed their jobseeker had asked if he could offer religious advice to the employees, whilst another asked if his wife, who worked at the company for which he was interviewing, was cheating on him.

A rather bold candidate asked how much money his future colleagues would be making, one sat in a yoga position throughout the interview and another tried to Google the answer to a question – in front of the interviewer.

The CareerBuilder survey also listed the top ten most annoying interview mishaps, that instantly turn off a recruiter. They are;
  • Failing to make eye contact: 65%
  • Failing to smile: 36%
  • Playing with something on the table: 33%
  • Having bad posture: 30%
  • Fidgeting too much in their seat: 29%
  • Crossing their arms over their chest: 26%
  • Playing with their hair or touching their face: 25%
  • Having a weak handshake: 22%
  • Using too many hand gestures: 11%
  • Having a handshake that is too strong: seven per cent
