Canadians losing out on vacation time

Think you need a break but don’t have the vacation time? You’re not alone – Canada is one of the worst countries in the world when it comes to mandated days off.

Canadians may like to think they’re doing pretty well when it comes to labour laws, but if you can barely remember your last vacation you’re not alone. Among wealthy nations Canada lags behind comparable countries on vacation days.

Where all European Union nations, as well as New Zealand and Australia have 20 days paid vacation a year, Canada has just 10 – equal with Japan and followed only by the USA which doesn’t require employers offer paid vacation at all.

According to the report by the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Economic and Policy Research, France leads the world with 30 days paid leave – c’est si bon, indeed.

The study examined the legal requirements for paid vacations and paid holidays in 21 advanced economies in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development –Canada, the U.S., Japan, Australia, New Zealand and 16 European countries.
