The leave isn't based on gender or sexual preference
Online banking giant Monzo has introduced paid leave for employees who suffer miscarriage as part of their new benefits package.
The bank has also introduced paid leave for any workers who’re undergoing fertility treatments. Monzo is well-known for their support for mental wellbeing and employee health. Earlier this year, CEO Tom Blomfield stepped down after openly admitting to having pandemic stress and anxiety issues.
The new policy will give either the employee or their partner up to 10 days of additional paid leave to cope with their situation.
“This also includes colleagues who are partners or surrogate mothers, recognising that pregnancy loss doesn’t just affect women or heterosexual couples,” the bank added.
And Monzo are by far the only company showcasing their unwavering commitment to their people. Earlier this month, HRD reported that life insurance firm YuLife are now offering all employees miscarriage leave – for both the employee and their respective partner.
Speaking to HRD, YuLife head of people Cali Gold revealed that this was an easy decision for the C-suite.
“After seeing what was happening in New Zealand, it really rang some semi-personal alarm bells,” she told HRD. “As an employer, we have a duty of care and a responsibility to our people. Ultimately, when our colleagues are facing anything to do with miscarriage, they’re forced to use valuable sick days. For us, it was important to implement a policy which gives people both time off and paid leave to look after themselves physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s important that we help eradicate the stigma around talking about these fairly common issues.”
