Expat employees won’t be able to leave the country if their employment or professional visit passes aren’t assigned to their current passport
Malaysian employers are being reminded of a strict policy concerning work passes which could interrupt the international travel of any expat staff.
“Malaysian authorities are strictly enforcing policies that require foreigners to transfer their work or other passes into a new passport when their old passport has expired,” reads an advisory from law firm Berry Appelman & Leiden.
This policy affects all permits and passes – including employment passes and professional visit passes – and could see international employees barred from exiting Malaysia.
“The stricter enforcement means foreign employees will be prevented from leaving the country if they have not completed the ‘transfer of endorsement’ procedures,” warns Berry Appelman & Leiden.
“Failure to complete the transfer could result in travel disruption if expatriate workers are stopped at the airport and prevented from leaving.”
Further, controlled nationals who require an entry visa and whose new passport is issued in their home country must apply for either a social or business visa from a Malaysian embassy before traveling.
