Resignation: Police recruit accused of assault: IPCA

Sergeant also sanctioned for raising his voice, pushing staff to the wall in another case

Resignation: Police recruit accused of assault: IPCA

An off-duty police recruit accused of indecently assaulting three others has resigned during the employment process, according to the Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) on Monday.

IPCA's summary of the investigation said the recruit allegedly indecently assaulted three fellow recruits while they were socialising at a restaurant and bar.

According to the report, the recruit involved was charged after sufficient evident surfaced during the criminal investigation.

"However, it was deemed not to be in the public interest to do so," the IPCA summary said.

IPCA oversaw the investigations carried out by the police over the incident.

"The authority is satisfied with how police conducted their investigation," the report said.

Alleged assault

In another case, a sergeant has been sanctioned by the police for allegedly assaulting a staff member.

The summary of investigation released by IPCA said the sergeant allegedly raised his voice at one of the officers in his team before pushing him into a wall.

"An employment investigation determined that the sergeant’s actions breached the Police Code of Conduct and amounted to serious misconduct," IPCA said in the summary.

The authority also oversaw the police investigation on the incident and said it agrees with the probe and its outcome.

IPCA is the official New Zealand Police oversight body, which handles, investigates, and resolves complaints about the police.

Last year, it found that the country's police failed to adequately respond to allegations of sexual assault against the Police Medical Officer.
