The FROG approach to recognition

Fostering a positive and engaged workplace culture is more critical than ever. As organisations adapt to hybrid work settings, they must recognise the importance of cultivating a culture of appreciation to ensure employee engagement and a positive work atmosphere.

In an interview with HRDTV, Sarah McVanel, chief recognition officer and founder of Greatness Magnified, discusses the transformative power of recognition in the workplace and its impact on company culture and employee wellbeing.

“Anywhere you have people is where we need to have recognition. Even when those people aren’t physically together, we have to be even more intentional about how we create a sense of connection,” said McVanel.

The most strategic time to use recognition in a team environment is when you see energy waning in your team, she said in the video interview.

“Energy goes where appreciation flows. So, when you see energy waning, amp up some appreciation. It can be as simple as reflection. Think of one person, think of one team that you have depended on this week that may have made a difference.”

The ‘FROG’ approach to recognition

FROG is an acronym for “Forever Recognising Others Greatness.” Emphasising the “forever” part of FROG Forever, McVanel said, “It starts with forever. In other words, we’re continually looking for examples of what’s working, and we’re not missing out on an opportunity to acknowledge it,” she said.

“Don't miss another moment to give recognition, because that may be the thing that that person needed to hear most, to choose not to leave, to be re motivated, to keep trying when maybe they're feeling overwhelmed and burdened.”
