Job ads decrease by 0.5% in September: report

 

Job ads across New Zealand saw a slight drop in September, as applications per job posting also registered its first decline in 12 months, according to the latest data from SEEK NZ.

The latest SEEK NZ Employment Report revealed a -0.5% dip in job ads in September, following a one per cent decline in the previous month.

"Job ads dropped slightly in September. However, the declines of the last two months are smaller than those seen earlier this year," said Rob Clark, SEEK NZ country manager, in a statement.

Job ads breakdown

By region, Canterbury saw the biggest increase in job ads to offset the smaller decreases in other regions, such as Auckland (-1%), Wellington (-1%), and Bay of Plenty (-1%).

The insurance and superannuation industry saw the biggest uplift in job ads with a 27% increase month-on-month. This is followed by Real Estate and Property (17%) and the Legal (11%) industries.

The human resources and recruitment sector also saw a three per cent increase, according to the report.

On the other hand, the biggest drop in job ads was recorded in the mining, resources, and energy industry (-17%). This is followed by the engineering (-11%) and farming, animals, and conservation industries (-10%).

Applications per job ad

Meanwhile, applications per job ad went down two per cent in August to decline for the first time in 12 months, according to SEEK NZ. By location, applications per job ad went up in:

  • Taranaki (13%) 
  • Gisborne (9%) 
  • Tasman (5%) 
  • Waikato (2%) 

Wellington, which saw applications per job ad increase for the past 12 months, remained steady in August with no change, according to SEEK NZ.
