INZ unveils changes to Post-Study Work Visa

Changes seek to give students 'more flexibility' and eligibility to work

INZ unveils changes to Post-Study Work Visa

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced changes to the Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV) to make it easier for international students to qualify after completing their studies.

Under the updated rules, students who took a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) for at least 30 weeks and then immediately progressed to a Master's degree — without enrolling in the Master's programme for the required 30 weeks — will now be eligible to apply for a PSWV based on their PGDip enrolment.

"This will give students more flexibility in their course of study and ensure they can remain eligible to work following their qualification," INZ said in its announcement.

The changes also address cases where a student has completed a qualification eligible for a PSWV and then proceeds to a higher-level qualification that does not meet the minimum study duration requirements.

"They will have 12 months from the end date of their student visa for the initial qualification to apply for a PSWV," INZ said.

PSWV eligibility

The PSWV allows holders to stay and work in New Zealand for three years depending on their level of study and how long they have studied in the country.

"To be eligible for a PSWV, applicants must hold an eligible New Zealand qualification that has been studied full-time in New Zealand for the required minimum duration and apply within the required timeframe," INZ said.

Students who want a three-year PSWV must complete at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand while enrolled in their Master's programme.

Further changes to PSWV qualifications

Meanwhile, INZ also announced further adjustments to the list of qualifications eligible for a PSWV. The said changes include:

  • PSWV applicants who qualify to teach at secondary school no longer require a Bachelor's degree specialising in Science, Mathematics, Technology or Pacific Languages
  • Applicants who have completed graduate diplomas and meet the Teaching Council's registration requirements are able to get a PSWV to work as a Primary or Intermediate school teacher
  • The New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Level 6) with a strand in Mechanical Engineering has been added so Mechanical Engineering Technicians are eligible for a PSWV.
