Filled jobs decline for June quarter, Stats NZ reports

The number of filled jobs in New Zealand has dropped slightly in the June 2024 quarter, with a total of 2.3 million actual filled jobs reported, according to data from Stats NZ.

Seasonally adjusted figures show a 0.4% decline in filled jobs between the March 2024 and June 2024 quarters, representing a loss of 8,789 jobs.

Among the industries, health care and social assistance saw a 1.4% rise in filled jobs, adding 3,843 positions. In contrast, other sectors reported declines:

  • Administrative and support services – down 2.9% (2,958 jobs)
  • Construction – down 1.2% (2,241 jobs)
  • Accommodation and food services – down 1.1% (1,761 jobs)

Stats NZ reported regional differences as well, with Auckland experiencing the largest drop in filled jobs at 0.7%, a loss of 5,248 jobs. Other regions also posted the following declines:

  • Waikato – down 0.3% (577 jobs)
  • Hawke’s Bay – down 0.7% (542 jobs)
  • Bay of Plenty – down 0.4% (539 jobs)
  • Taranaki – down 1.0% (517 jobs)

In terms of gender, both men and women saw modest increases in filled jobs over the year. Compared to the June 2023 quarter, the number of filled jobs rose by 0.4% (4,333 jobs) for men and also by 0.4% (4,911 jobs) for women.

Meanwhile, earnings data for the year ending June 2024 shows an increase in total gross earnings, which were up by 7.6%, or $12.5 billion, when compared to the year ending June 2023.

"We use an annual comparison for earnings to account for payroll timing differences between quarters," Stats NZ said.

The health care and social assistance sector saw the largest increase in earnings, up 17% $3.3 billion. Other sectors logged the following increases:

  • Public administration and safety – up 10% ($1.5 billion)
  • Education and training – up 11% ($1.4 billion)
