New Zealand's filled jobs decline in September quarter

Total filled jobs in New Zealand continued their decline after decreasing 0.7% in the September 2024 quarter, according to the latest data from Stats NZ.

The seasonally adjusted total number of filled jobs fell by 16,763 to 2.3 million compared with the previous quarter, Stats NZ's Business employment data report revealed.

Among the industries, the construction sector registered the biggest decrease of 1.9% (3,496 jobs). Other industries recorded:

  • Accommodation and food services – down 1.8% (2,773 jobs) 
  • Administrative and support services – down 2.5% (2,464 jobs) 
  • Manufacturing – down 1.0% (2,268 jobs) 
  • Retail trade – down 0.7% (1,561 jobs)

Regional filled jobs data

At the regional level, Auckland and Wellington saw the biggest declines in filled jobs in the September quarter. The regions logged the following drops:

  • Auckland – down 0.9% (6,860 jobs) 
  • Wellington – down 1.0% (2,608 jobs) 
  • Canterbury – down 0.5% (1,400 jobs) 
  • Bay of Plenty – down 0.6% (818 jobs) 
  • Waikato – down 0.4% (781 jobs)

Filled jobs also declined by 1.2% for women (14,172 jobs), a much bigger difference compared to men, who fell by 0.5% (5,842) from the September 2023 quarter to the September 2024 quarter, according to Stats NZ.

Meanwhile, total gross earnings in New Zealand went up 5.9% ($9.8 billion) for the year ended September 2024 compared with the year ended September 2023. Earnings by industry show:

  • Health care and social assistance – up 14% ($2.8 billion) 
  • Public administration and safety – up 8.5% ($1.3 billion) 
  • Education and training – up 6.9% ($900 million)
