New Zealand now has the most powerful passport in the world – according to a recent global ranking.
The Passport Index lists the power of passports in real-time, factoring in legislative changes, visa restrictions and entry requirements.
New Zealand was at one time linked in joint first position with Japan. However, earlier today, it rose above to claim the definitive top spot – with New Zealand now having visa-free access to 129 countries.

In joint second spot for the most powerful passport are Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Ireland, South Korea, Japan and Australia.
Throughout the recent COVID-19 pandemic, New Zealand has remained comparatively strong. The government response to the national crisis served as something of a benchmark. A recent survey of leaders by PRovoke listed Jacinda Arden as the top COVID-19 communicator - beating out the likes of Angela Markel, Narendra Modi and Donald Trump.

Well, it signals a light at the end of the tunnel for business travellers who’re keen to start hopping around the world again. The power of a nation’s passport can be linked to its economic growth and success – meaning employers can attract and retain talent from a wider global net.
By claiming the number one spot, New Zealand will undoubtedly become a key target for top tier talent looking to relocate post-COVID.
