Navigating the uncertain terrain: The future of AI in HR

The view into the future of AI is an uncertain one with many challenges still to navigate. But AI is also reshaping industries on an unprecedented scale and the intersection of AI and HR is no exception.

In an HRDTV interview, Jim Carroll, a renowned futurist, keynote speaker and business trends and transformation expert, shares his insights into the critical importance of AI proficiency, the need to address biases, and the evolution of HR roles.

Carroll also shares insights into the practical applications of generative AI for HR leaders in the digital age and introduces the concept of “just-in-time knowledge” as a crucial skill for HR leaders in the digital age.

“The most important skill we can develop as an HR leader is getting the right knowledge at the right time for the right purpose,” said Carroll. “AI can be a game-changer in this area,” he said elaborating on AI-powered tools that can summarise complex documents and videos in a matter of seconds, enabling HR professionals to make informed decisions more effectively.

In the video, Carroll emphasizes the critical need for HR leaders to strike a balance between automation and fairness in hiring practices.

“There's been obvious situations already where we have model bias,” he says, and it’s important to be vigilant in ensuring AI-driven recruitment processes are fair and unbiased.

AI’s future impact on HR

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into HR, Carroll predicts a shift in the composition of HR teams. He sees the emergence of AI specialists dedicated to navigating the complexities of AI in HR processes.

“We probably will have folks who are simply specialists in learning how to work with, interact, manage queries, and design to eliminate model bias,” he said.

Highlighting that in the future, HR professionals will need to prepare for jobs and knowledge that have not yet materialised, Carroll told HRDTV: “We’re now in a situation in which companies that do not yet exist will build products not yet conceived.”
