Charity sheds light on glaring gender pay gap
A non-profit group is raising awareness of the gender pay gap through a striking faux announcement: they are out of office until next year.
It’s part of the latest campaign of Global Women called "Last Working Day of the Year," where participants will issue a message that states they are "out of office until January 1, 2022."
It aims to capture the attention of audiences so the group can highlight the real problem at hand - that New Zealand women are paid less than their male counterparts.
"On average, New Zealand women are paid 9.1% less than our male counterparts – and with 9.1% of the year left, this effectively means that from today, 29th November onwards, women are working for free," the group's message said. "This inequality is even worse for Māori and Pasifika women, who began 'working for free' from November 10th and October 18th respectively.”
The group is also encouraging other individuals and organisations to support and spread awareness on their cause by also issuing out their own "out-of-office" message that contains the critical information on gender pay gap.
"We urgently need to close the gender pay gap in New Zealand. Help us drive the conversation today and every day until this is achieved," the organisation added.
The campaign was launched in an effort from the group to "bring gender equity and pay transparency to the fore." In addition to the campaign, the group is also advocating for pay gap reporting and supporting the Demand Pay Transparency petition movement with the Human Rights Commission.
