Organisation's co-governance model with mana whenua recognised
The Western Bay of Plenty Primary Health Organisation won the Supreme Award at the 2024 Diversity Awards in Auckland on Wednesday.
The awards recognised the organisation's co-governance model with mana whenua, which it said is "driving equitable health outcomes for Māori and creating an environment where its kaimahi and all the people they serve can thrive."
Maretha Smit, chief executive of Diversity Works, said the partnership and the cultural understanding it fosters transform the organisation's mahi to support and deliver community-based primary health care and wellness services.
Aside from the top prize, the organisation also won the Medium-Large Organisation Winner in the Ngā Āhuatanga o te Tiriti category at the awards.
The organisation is a joint venture between Ngāi Te Rangi iwi, Ngāti Ranginui iwi, and Western Bay of Plenty Primary Care Providers Incorporated. It is also the first and only Primary Health Organisation governed by a partnership between mana whenua and providers.
Kiri Peita, General Manager Māori, Population Health and Equity, said the partnership is more than just a contractual arrangement.
"They are anchored in transparency, open communication, and a sincere desire to achieve common goals," Peita said in a statement. "We firmly believe whānau, hapū, and iwi must lead, determine, and guide pathways to live long and healthy lives today and for generations to come."
