Employers told to scrutinise payment practices to reduce gender pay gap

BusinessNZ is urging organisations to join the efforts in reducing the gender pay gap by reviewing their payment practices.

"Businesses and other organisations can help to reduce the gap further by carefully scrutinising their own payment practices and rectifying any pay imbalance they might find," said Business NZ chief executive Katherine Rich in a statement.

Rich made the remarks as she noted the "significant progress" that New Zealand achieved in terms of reducing the gender pay gap.

The latest gender pay gap is currently at 8.2% in June 2024, according to Stats NZ. This is down by half from the 16% recorded in 1998.

To further reduce the gender pay gap, the New Zealand government recently launched a new Gender Pay Gap Calculator to help organisations identify and address the pay gap in their workplaces.

According to BusinessNZ, they are also hosting the new resources on its website.

Minister for Women Nicola Grigg previously urged all businesses to "be courageous and calculate their gaps" to reduce the country's gender pay gaps.

"This is not about casting judgement on those who have wider gender pay gaps but, instead, is a useful tool that encourages organisations to look beyond the numbers," Grigg said.
