Employers told to focus on 'full package' to stay competitive

If employers want to remain attractive to jobseekers, they need to focus on offering the "full package" and not just the money.

This was the advice of Beyond Recruitment CEO Liza Viz, following the company's release of its salary guide for the technology, transformation, and digital sector.

Viz pointed out that flexibility has become a "very important consideration" for jobseekers as of late, with many of them seeking hybrid work arrangements from their potential employers.

"We're seeing quite a range in the types of flexibility offered by organisations now," said Viz. "Some employers are open to hiring 100% remote workers however this isn't the norm. Some organisations are trialling a four-day work week."

"The options that trumps is hybrid working as organisations understand the importance of their teams working together and ensuring the culture stays intact," she added.

In addition, Viz also said that employees are eyeing extended holidays of four to eight weeks, with some jobseekers "taking this either before starting a role or having the leave agreed on before accepting a role."

Her advice came as Beyond Recruitment released its Winter 2022 Salary Guide for the New Zealand Tech Sector, which revealed that most roles in the industry are offering six-figure salaries.

"We're seeing that high-demand skills are still requiring a premium rate or salary. New Zealand is especially short of all types of software developers, automation testers, DevOps, site reliability engineers and integration architects," said Viz. "However, the curve is flattening slightly on permanent salaries and where flexibility is allowed, we are seeing a plateau."

According to the CEO, Auckland roles tend to have the highest pay, while there is a growing tech sector demand in Waikato. For the Bay of Plenty, the industries of agriculture, council, power, and utilities are also needing IT professionals.

Ben Pearson, Executive General Manager – Wellington, Beyond Recruitment, said the capital is seeing a "slight increase" thanks to the government sector and general growth.

"There tends to be a lot of contract roles in Wellington, especially as government work is often project driven. With the tight labour market, there has been an increase in rates and salaries," said Pearson.

"As well as skills in the technical side of IT, we're noticing that project managers, product managers, and product owners are growing in demand."
