The suspect recognised his actions as 'reprehensible'
A former medical technician in West Pennsylvania will be facing 11 to 22 months in jail, among other punishments, for secretly taping his colleagues and patients in the bathroom. The suspect, 53-year-old Guy Caley, was also ordered to pay nearly US$23,000 in restitution to cover the therapy and medication expenses of some of his victims, The Associated Press reported.
The punishment came as Caley pleaded guilty in May to 89 felony and misdemeanour counts of intercepting communications and invasion of privacy, according to the report. He was first charged in 2020 after his small video camera was discovered in a third-floor bathroom by a fellow the West Penn Hospital employee.
Prosecutors said footages from the camera showed three of Caley's colleagues partially naked, and it also had images of the suspect attaching the equipment in the bathroom.
In a sentencing hearing on Monday, which was also attended by his victims, Caley admitted that he did not consider the harm from his behaviour, which he described as "reprehensible, hurtful, inexcusable."
His defence attorney, Joe Otte, added that his client also understood that he breached public trust for his actions.
In addition to his jail time, an Allegheny County judge also ordered Caley to spend 10 years on probation and to register as a sex offender for 15 years after his release.
