Several hundred workers also being reassigned to other areas
More than 3,000 employees of Toshiba Corp's group of companies have applied for the company's early retirement programme, according to reports.
This number represents about five per cent of the organisation's domestic workforce, Kyodo News reported, as published on Japan Today.
According to the report, which cited sources familiar with the matter, these applicants for early retirement were expected to leave their companies by the end of November.
They will also receive retirement payments, as well as assistance in finding a new job.
The early retirement programme is part of Toshiba's move to rebuild itself after going private in 2023 following a ¥2-trillion buyout that ended its 74-year-long run as a listed entity.
It said that it would cut its workforce by six per cent in Japan, or by slashing 4,000 jobs, through the early retirement packages.
Meanwhile, Kyodo News also reported that "several hundred employees" are set to be reassigned to other areas, such as its infrastructure business, with its Tokyo headquarters to be consolidated into another one in Kawasaki City.
Toshiba had more than 65,000 employees in its group firms in Japan by the end of September 2024, according to Kyodo News. Its post-restructure losses are set to be reported in the year ending March.
