HR lags in internship openings despite demand in Singapore: report

Singapore's human resources sector saw one of the lowest shares of job openings for interns, despite a surge in demand for them across the country in recent years, according to Indeed.

Its latest data showed that corporate roles in Singapore made up the three lowest sectors when it comes to internship job openings.

The HR sector only made up nine per cent share of all postings that contained internship keywords, according to Indeed.

Real estate and administration also made up only eight per cent and seven per cent, respectively.

The findings come despite the number of internship job postings in Singapore doubling from March 2022 to March 2025.

Last year saw a 47% increase, according to Indeed, with the hike most pronounced in creative industries, such as:

  • Marketing (22%)

  • Media (17%)

  • Art (17%)

Rohan Sylvester, Talent Strategy Advisor, Indeed, said the surge in demand for interns reflects employers' ongoing commitment to innovation amid growing investment in new digital technologies and transformation of customer engagement strategies.

"Interns bring relevant skills, creativity, and out-of-the-box thinking, which are critical ingredients to fuelling innovation," Sylvester said in a statement.

"For employers, internships offer a resource-efficient way to inject and test bold ideas while building a pipeline of future talent."

In-demand intern skills

According to Indeed, soft skills are in demand when it comes to internship roles, with communication being the most sought-after skill based on job postings (30%). Other skills that are most mentioned in internship job postings are:

  • Microsoft Office (15%)

  • Analysis (9%)

  • Finance (6%)

  • Python (6%)

  • Writing skills (5.2%)

  • Project management (5%)

Sylvester advised students and fresh graduates to capitalise on the surge of internships to develop T-shaped skillsets.

"Automating routine tasks and processes is a great opportunity for interns to focus on skills such as creativity and adaptability, which will help businesses navigate ambiguity and discover new opportunities in today's uncertain world," he said.

"While technical and domain expertise remains essential, interns who can blend hard and soft skills will be the ones that thrive."
