What's the average wage hike being offered by Japanese employers?

Employers across Japan are offering an average of 5.58% increase in wages this year, according to an initial tally among major firms in the country.

Japan Today reported the survey from the country's biggest business lobby, which garnered 89 responses in 16 industries so far.

According to the report, if the average is maintained until the final tally set for release between late July and early August, this would by the highest wage hike since 1991's 5.60%.                                        

By industry, wage increases average:

  • Steelmakers (12.04%)
  • Machine and metal makers (6.85%)
  • Shipbuilders (6.07%)
  • Manufacturers (5.85%)
  • Non-manufacturers (4.85%)

The major hike in wages follow a strong wage hike offers in the past year.

"The momentum of wage hikes has been growing since last year. We hope to ensure that this trend takes root," the business lobby said as quoted by Japan Today.

The hike is also close to the average pay hike of 5.17%, which is sourced from a survey among members unions in Japan.
