LinkedIn finds 10% of workers hired this year have job titles that didn’t exist in 2000
As artificial intelligence (AI) transforms the nature of work, the skills required to succeed in the workplace are quickly changing.
In Singapore, it’s projected that by 2030, 72% of the skills needed for jobs will have changed due to the technological advancements of Gen AI – a skills shift which highlights how critical continuous learning and upskilling is to keep up with the rate of change. For HR professionals, fostering a culture of learning has never been more critical. Yet, with busy schedules and competing priorities, many professionals say they struggle to find the time to focus on learning.
Enter “Loud Learning,” a growing trend that encourages individuals to be vocal and intentional about dedicating time to upskill. For HR professionals this means encouraging their employees to openly commit to their learning journey – a move which enhances personal development, but also inspires others to do the same.
And according to LinkedIn, 60% of Singaporean professionals say engaging in Loud Learning can help advance their careers.
The challenges for Singapore professionals
While the need for upskilling is clear, professionals in Singapore face significant practical barriers. A recent LinkedIn survey found that 95% of Singaporean professionals encounter obstacles when trying to prioritize skill development at work. These include:
1. Work-related burnout: professionals feel exhausted from their busy schedules, leaving little room for learning.
2. Personal responsibilities: struggle to find time due to family and other personal commitments.
3. Motivation: workers feel unable to commit to learning even when they recognize its importance.
If not addressed, these challenges can have a negative impact on career growth and leave many professionals unprepared for future job demands. The solution? It all starts by creating a learning-focused culture in the workplace. There is clearly significant room to grow here, as only 53% of Singaporean professionals believe that their company promotes a culture of learning.
How two leading organizations are driving a culture of learning
To bridge the gap between where professionals are in their development today and where they need to be, “Loud Learning” has burst onto the scene.
This concept encourages employees to take control of their learning journeys by visibly setting aside time to develop new skills, and sharing their progress with colleagues. The idea is simple – by being open about your commitment to learning, you can inspire others to follow suit and create a ripple effect throughout the organization.
For L&D professionals, promoting Loud Learning does not need to be complicated. One of the most effective tactics is to actively block out time for learning and encourage employees to do the same, making professional growth a visible priority across the team.
As Maybelle Santos Davin, Head of Learning, Engagement, and Development at Maya Philippines, notes, “With LinkedIn Learning as our support mechanism and tool, we're able to provide that service to our employees. Moving forward, we want to be able to deliver learning at scale.”
Santos Davin adds that a culture of learning, backed with AI-powered solutions, is able to help surface the right skills that employees need on their career growth journeys. Making career development more personalised and scalable.
“The world is our oyster when it comes to doing more with less resources, with the help of AI."
For Gemaima de Guzman, Chief HR officer at MDI Novare, the advent of AI has created a huge opportunity to sharpen soft skills such as empathy, organisation and critical thinking.
“AI will power these human skills, making them more impactful in our communications and interactions,” de Guzman says. “Today, it’s really all about our people. It’s about bringing everyone along, leaving no one behind. We are in a fast-paced world of technology, and we need to ensure continuous learning and skill-building for everyone.”
Sharing learning progress can be taken a step further by L&D pros, who can also promote the idea of a "Learning BFF" — a peer who supports and motivates learning efforts.
When leadership teams model this behaviour by openly engaging in their own learning, it reinforces the message that continuous development is valued at all levels of the organization.
“Loud Learning” can empower career growth and skills development
The practice of Loud Learning has already resulted in tangible benefits in Singapore’s workplaces. 56% of Singaporean professionals say Loud Learning has helped them advance their careers, with progression opportunities, mentorship, and peer-to-peer insights being the biggest benefits.
The visibility they gain can also lead to mentorship opportunities, increased recognition, and potential promotions. It allows employees to showcase their dedication to keeping their skillset relevant and up-to-date, which can work wonders for ‘personal branding’ when considering career goal ambitions.
Ultimately, the success of proactive learning doesn’t just benefit individuals – it also filters down to the bottom line. In the context of AI's growing influence, having a team that is continuously developing both technical and human-centric skills is crucial for long-term success in all businesses, no matter their industry.
