240%: Singapore reports major surge in GenAI enrolment

Enrolments for generative AI courses surged by 240% in Singapore amid recruiters' strong hiring preference for jobseekers with related skills.

Coursera said GenAI enrolments in Singapore hit nearly 50,000 in 2024, with one GenAI enrolment every 14 minutes in the learning platform.

This strong demand for GenAI enrolments put Singapore in the lead in Southeast Asia, and within the top 15 countries globally for GenAI course enrolments on Coursera.

"Singaporean learners embraced the future of work in 2024, prioritising GenAI and job-aligned, mission-critical skills to stay competitive in an evolving job market," said Raghav Gupta, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Coursera, in a statement.

Demand for AI-skilled jobseekers

Coursera's findings come amid employers' growing preference for AI-skilled jobseekers during recruitment.

Microsoft and LinkedIn's 2024 Work Trend Index revealed that 66% of leaders worldwide would not hire someone without AI skills.

This percentage increases to 71% in Singapore, with 77% of leaders in the country also saying that they'd rather hire a less experienced candidate with AI skills than a more experienced candidate without them.

With the strong demand for an AI-skilled workforce, Gupta said they expect the need for AI literacy to also go up.

"In 2025, we expect the global race toward AI literacy to further accelerate, and we remain committed to empowering Singaporean learners with accessible and transformative education for success in the AI-powered world," he said.
