Reminds foreign workers to 'engage in responsible and respectful discussions'
In a message directed at foreigners working or living in Singapore, the Ministry of Manpower is calling for “calm” given the turmoil in the Middle East.
“The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict has claimed the innocent lives of many civilians and evoked emotions globally. Given the heightened tensions, it is important that we remain calm and not let these external events affect the racial and religious harmony and peace in Singapore.”
Foreigners working or living in Singapore “should not use Singapore as a platform to further their political causes,” said the ministry.
“We would also like to remind everyone to engage in responsible and respectful discussions on this sensitive topic.
Singapore adopts a zero-tolerance approach against any acts of extremism, violence or terrorism. Any individual who engages in such acts will be dealt with swiftly in accordance to the law.”
Earlier, CEOs of major corporations were encouraged to sign a pledge from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) that aims to actively prevent antisemitism in workplaces.
Facebook post outlines rules
In a post on Facebook, MOM provided an advisory for foreign workers, including:
- “Do not support or import foreign politics into Singapore. This includes the public display of materials such as banners, flags and posters.”
- “Do not write, post or share any information in-person or online which may stire up emotions that result in violence or cause hatred among different races or religions.”
- “Do not speculate or spread unverified information on the Israel-Hamas conflict that may cause discomfort to others.”
Previously, the ministry released a travel advisory on Oct. 8 stating Singaporeans should avoid all travel to the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Israel’s borders with the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria.
