Chipotle speeds up hiring with new AI tool ahead of 'Burrito Season'

Chipotle Mexican Grill is utilising artificial intelligence to make the hiring process more efficient as it seeks to recruit 20,000 additional employees ahead of the busy "Burrito Season" in March.

The AI-powered platform, which uses conversational AI, features virtual team member ‘Ava Cado’ that can chat with candidates and answer their questions about Chipotle. It is also capable of:

  • Collecting basic information
  • Scheduling interviews for hiring managers
  • Sending offers to candidates selected by managers

Chipotle said the platform, which was introduced in October last year, served the following benefits for the restaurant firm:

  • Shortening the average amount of time it takes for a candidate to complete their application and start on the job from 12 days to four days
  • Nearly doubling applicant flow
  • Increasing candidate application completion rate to over 85% from approximately 50%

Chipotle's massive hiring drive

The deployment of the AI platform comes as Chipotle opens its doors to 20,000 additional employees ahead of the busy "Burrito Season" from March to May.

"Burrito Season presents candidates with an opportunity to start here, stay here, and reach their career goals with us," said Ilene Eskenazi, Chief Human Resources Officer, in a statement.

The restaurant firm said its employees can access for free the critically acclaimed Calm App, which helps users sleep more, stress less, and live mindfully.

It also highlighted the potential of its employees to progress within the firm, where five out of its 11 regional vice presidents began as crew members who worked their way up the ladder.

It also noted that it promoted 23,000 team members, with 85% of all restaurant management role promotions being internal.

"As current team members have demonstrated, our restaurants can be the foundation of a fulfilling career, and we're committed to bringing in the best candidates who share our values and onboarding them as efficiently as possible," Eskenazi said.
