Former employee in Singapore submitted false allowance claims to get more money monthly
An associate director of human resources at an interior design firm has been sentenced to 18 months and six weeks in jail for embezzling nearly SG$200,000 from her employer, according to reports.
Tan Lee Nah was hired as human resources manager at D'Perception Singapore in March 2017. She was later promoted to associate director of human resources in May 2019, The Straits Times reported.
She was in charge of the company's entire payroll and was the only person that had password access to its payroll system, according to the report.
Her offences began two months after she was hired, where she submitted false allowance claims that gave her an extra $1,000 to $6,000 every month.
In 2017, Tan also deposited to her account two cheques of about $1,500 that were originally meant for the Central Provident Contributions of a new employee, according to reports.
Overall, she embezzled a total of $195,786 from her employer.
Tan was only discovered in November 2019 after the company's managing director was tipped off that she was receiving allowances on top of her basic salary.
She was fired in December 2019, with the company's finance director filing a police report.
In court, Tan pleaded guilty to two counts of cheating and one charge of criminal breach of trust. She also expressed remorse over her actions.
