'Be positive': Employers urged to take care of departing employees

Employers are being told to keep a "positive" attitude towards departing employees to foster a strong alumni community for the organisation.

A white paper from the Achievers Workforce Institute said departing employees are a "valuable" source of candid, relevant information."

"Be positive about people moving on when they choose, and formalise an exit interview and survey process to learn from their departure," the paper read.

According to the report, providing a positive exit experience contributes strongly to an alumni community of advocates.

"Corporate alumni networks can become important communities that support both former employees and companies," it said.

"A vibrant and active alumni network and a welcoming company culture focused on building a sense of belonging beyond the first and final days of employment sends a signal to prospective candidates that the company cares for its people, and people care about their time with the company."

A potential talent pool

Meanwhile, having a healthy network of alumni can also provide employers with a potential pool of boomerang employees.

"Alumni networks of employees that leave the company to explore new opportunities to grow and develop as professionals can become your best talent pool," it said.

It noted that boomerang employees, or those returning to the organisation after resigning, benefit employers with shorter onboarding times and a better awareness of the organisation's values.

The report from Achievers and the Workforce Institute highlighted the importance of belonging even towards departing employees in the workplace. Read more about belonging by grabbing your free copy here.
